Objective: The investment strategy of the fund is to purchase units in the M&G UK Equity Fund - the underlying fund.
Underlying Fund Objective: The fund invests, via other M&G funds, in the shares of UK companies. The fund is actively managed against its benchmark, the FTSE All-Share Index. It is a “fund of funds” holding units in several more specialised UK equity funds giving access to a variety of methods for generating investment returns in differing market conditions. Derivative instruments may be used for efficient portfolio management.
Performance Objective: To outperform the benchmark by 0.75% - 1.0% a year (before charges) on a rolling three year basis.
With access to investment professionals around the world, the M&G Treasury & Investment Office (T&IO) has a broad and well-resourced investment capability. T&IO set the strategic asset allocation and undertakes the ‘manager of managers’ role for our insured funds. Over the years they have built a thorough and effective governance framework, which includes the setting and monitoring of investment mandates, regular performance and activity health checks and independent analysis of investment, credit and liquidity risks.

Performance as at Q2 2024 - The UK stockmarket continued to advance, making solid gains in the second quarter, and it was ahead of the wider market. UK inflation slowed to reach the Bank of England 2.0% target, in turn bolstering hopes that interest rate cuts would follow in the near term. Small-cap stocks outperformed their larger counterparts over the quarter. In this environment, the fund gained and was ahead of its benchmark. The Recovery and the UK Equity Dividend funds were ahead of their respective indices, while UK Equity Growth and Smaller Companies funds underperformed their indices. The Recovery Fund’s outperformance was driven by stock selection, particularly within consumer staples, industrials and healthcare. Contributors included biotech and medical research company Mesoblast, which recently reached a significant milestone, with the US Food and Drug Administrator inviting the company to apply for approval for remestemcel-L with no further trials required. Overweight positions in International Distribution Services and Hargreaves Lansdown also added value. International Distribution Services’ board has recommended an offer at a 70% premium to the pre-offer price, pushing up the share price year to date by around 20%. Hargreaves Lansdown shares were up after an improved bid by a trio of private equity firms that values the firm at over £5 billion. The Equity Dividend Fund’s performance was supported by sector allocation, with below-index positions in consumer discretionary, consumer staples and industrials adding value. Stock selection was also positive for performance. Contributors included BT, which increased its dividend and offered cash flow guidance to 2030 as its fibre rollout nears completion, leading to an uptick in free cash flow. Hargreaves Lansdown and International Distribution Services also added value, as mentioned above. In contrast, global sports betting and gaming company Entain detracted. The firm’s UK online revenue was down year on year in the first quarter of this year as regulatory pressure weighed on its margins. The relative performance of the Smaller Companies Fund was held back by sector allocation and stock selection. Detractors included oil & gas producer Serica Energy, which has been hurt by concerns over changes in the political environment. M&A activity was beneficial for the fund in the quarter. For example Tyman, which supplies engineered components to the door and window industry, and Alpha Financial Markets Consulting received bid approaches and added notable value. Finally, the Equity Growth Fund’s sector allocation detracted modestly, while stock selection was broadly neutral. Detractors included beverage firm Diageo. The US market remains under pressure and is taking longer to recover than initially expected. Positions in investment platform operators IntegraFin and AJ Bell added value. IntegraFin reported a strong financial operational first half to the year and its shares rebounded strongly over the quarter. AJ Bell had another strong quarter for net inflows, outperforming the majority of its peers in the process.

Some funds may invest in ‘underlying’ funds or other investment vehicles. The performance of our fund, compared to what it’s invested in won’t be exactly the same. That can be due to additional charges, cash management (needed to help people to enter and leave our fund when they want), tax and the timing of investments (this is known as a fund’s dealing cycle, it varies between managers and can be several days).

These risk ratings have been developed by Prudential to help provide an indication of a fund’s potential level of risk and reward based on the type of assets which may be held by the fund. Other companies may use different descriptions and as such these risk ratings should not be considered as generic across the fund management industry.
We regularly review our fund risk ratings, so they may change in the future. If, in our view, there is a material change in the fund's level of risk, for example due to a significant change to the assets held by the fund or in the way the fund is managed, we will provide information on the new risk rating. We recommend that you make sure you understand the risk rating of any fund before you invest.
